The Wickedness of Nineveh: This Is What Made Them So Wicked

What Is Nineveh?

Nineveh was a Biblical city that was very prominent in the Hebrew Bible. It had a symbolic force, but it was also known as an evil city.

This city was the capital of the new Assyrian empire in the seventh century BC. However, the Israelites were always fighting with Nineveh.

Sennacherib was the king of this city, and he attacked Jerusalem. In addition to the war and chaos, the people of this city were living in sin and were called sodomites.

Who Was Jonah?

Nineveh was wicked, and God sent Jonah, a minor prophet, to punish the city.

Jonah was the son of Amittai, who originally came from Zebulun. This is one of the earliest prophets in the Old Testament, and you can read his story in the Book of Jonah.

This is only a book of 48 verses, but it’s a very powerful story. God called Jonah to go and warn Nineveh that their sin was going to doom them.

However, this city didn’t listen to him, and eventually, Jonah had to flee, where he was swallowed by a sea creature or whale.

While in the mouth of that whale, Jonah prayed to God to keep him safe, and eventually, the whale spat him out. Jonah was then free to go forward and spread the Word of God even more.

Lessons From the Book of Jonah

The Book of Jonah is in the Old Testament, and it talks about the destruction of Nineveh and Jonah’s struggle in trying to save them.

However, even though it’s a small book, there are still so many lessons to learn from this book.

So what can Christians learn from a sermon on Jonah? They can learn that God has a divine will and that we should follow him.

God told Jonah to go to Nineveh through a message, and Jonah didn’t argue or question God. Even though he was inwardly struggling; he still followed God’s will and saw how God protected him.

When he arrived in Nineveh, the people didn’t listen to him, and Jonah became even more frustrated. God protected Jonah to help him and showed him compassion even if Jonah was starting to lose his faith in God.
