In the New Thought philosophy, the Law of Attraction is the belief that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into a person’s life. As this month’s theme is ‘Design the Life of Your Dreams‘, I’ve got in touch with Michael James (www.michaeljames.be and www.lawofattractioncentre.com) where he talks about what Law of Attraction and Manifesting is, how to get started and more – so keep reading.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am a coach and author who teaches workshops, groups and powerful 1-2-1 sessions to help people enjoy their life more.
What inspired you to become a Life Coach?
On my own search, whilst dealing with anxiety and depression – and overthinking just about everything – I interviewed counsellors and coaches some of my at-the-time-favourite spiritual teachers and authors (through my previous career as a journalist) and got to a certain point to help myself. But there was something missing. I soon realised it was part of my purpose to find the answers to these questions and then help others (and, in fact, that’s what several spiritual teachers encouraged me to do). And so I did, beginning with facilitating study groups and discovering for myself what worked and what didn’t when it came to personal development. And then I created my own method.
I wrote this book to deal with those intense emotions that so many books can’t reach. Emotional states like fear, shame, depression, anxiety or jealousy. It’s an “open at random” book designed to soothe you no matter what mood you’re in and what’s going on. It also has some powerful information about life and how to live it. It’s got some really great feedback, too.
What Is The Law Of Attraction?
The Law of Attraction is just another way to describe the process of life, which so many people have attempted to describe throughout history. Like most of the philosophies out there, there has been much misinterpretation and confusion. One of the many misinterpretations about the Law of Attraction is when people try to use it to get something they haven’t got. It’s well-intentioned, but it doesn’t work – because we attract what we are, not what we want. The list goes on of false premises and pitfalls people have when “trying to make the Law of Attraction work” and what I bring is a very down to earth and practical approach to making life work that goes beyond labels such as “the Law of Attraction”. At the heart of all paths, is the teaching of unconditional love. So I believe ultimately that’s what the Law of Attraction is about – more than it is about “getting stuff” (though I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting material things).
How do you Start Using The Law Of Attraction?
Coming from a Law of Attraction perspective, you could say that we are already using it – Life tends to mirror back how we feel about ourselves – and also brings us those experiences we need to come into full self-knowledge and self-empowerment. It works this way whether we know about it or not. In many ways, life is about evolution and how to enjoy the process of evolution. To start deliberately applying the Law of Attraction I would say it’s the same advice to start anything new: It’s a good idea to start by finding ways to relax; to calm the mind; to meditate. Clear your mind and then you are in a good place to begin.
What is “Manifesting”?
The word manifestation literally means “revealing”. And so it is revealing what is already there. Just as Jesus said (in the non-canonical gospels) that Heaven is here now, but you just don’t see it – manifesting is more about adjusting our perspective to see what is already there than creating anything from nothing.
What does it mean to have a High or Low Vibration?
I find that separating things into high and low vibration can get into duality – which doesn’t work very well to develop inner peace. It can get very judgemental in other words, separating others into high or low categories. Because ultimately, everyone has an aspect of them that is a high vibration, even though it can often be hidden – and it’s our work to see that; to see the truth in people (including ourselves). However when people talk about high and low vibrations when it comes to themselves, they are usually talking about being in a good mood (high vibration, clear-minded) or bad mood (low vibration, overthinking). I think that’s what you mean by the question. Life tends to reflect back how we feel about ourselves, you could say that having a high vibration is a high awareness of self-love.
What has been the most exciting collaboration you’ve worked on so far?
I enjoyed the retreats we used to do at Abbey House Glastonbury before it closed last year. It was a beautiful, peaceful place and people experienced amazing shifts in their life. I plan to facilitate more retreats next year – and I’m in talks with some collaborations with some big name teachers of personal development who I respect, plus I’m in talks with a major publisher for my next few books. So lots going on.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on a new retreat intensive and two upcoming books, FreeSelf, which is the sequel to Lighthouse and deals with all the emotional things that come up about relationships, romantic relationships predominantly but also family relationships – and the relationship we have with ourselves (self-love). Also, I’m writing a follow-up book all about visualisation and answering the question of how exactly we create our own reality. There’s a lot of hype out there but more frustration than results. In this book I share for the first time a process which seems to be having amazing results – the biggest I have yet seen – which I’ve so far only shared with one-to-one clients.
Do you have any words of wisdom that you would like to pass on?
Wherever you are is ok. Even if you can’t see that right now. This kind of acceptance is an important first step and key for moving to the place you want to be.
